Digitalisation including Smart Industry stands for rapid changes. As Holland High Tech, we strive to promote innovations in the field of digital technologies. Read more about the current state of affairs and future ambitions we harbour for Digitalisation including Smart Industry.

State of affairs

Digitalization including smart industry are themes that are changing global economies and societies at breakneck speed. It is important to keep in step with this transformation. As a sector, we have to innovate new digital technologies and act as a catalyst for the development of innovation in (new) digital technologies. Can we digitalise and computerise our manufacturing and business processes and our data exchange in time? Then we can continue to participate internationally. This will make our Dutch companies future-proof.

In the high-tech systems and materials sector (HTSM sector), digital key enabling technologies play an important role (see the Knowledge and Innovation agenda (KIA) Key Enabling Technologies and the Knowledge and Innovation Agenda Digitalisation). They help to optimise manufacturing processes, improve quality and efficiency and strengthen (digital) security. They have enormous influence on the development of innovations. The economic and societal impact on the high-tech sector in the Netherlands is also immense. This does involve countless challenges to be tackled. How are we going to deal with the shortage of qualified staff and ethical questions?

Om wereldwijd te blijven ontwikkelen moeten we focussen op digitalisering en smart industry, ook om de circulaire economie en de energietransitie mogelijk te maken.

To continue to develop worldwide, we need to focus on digitalisation and smart industry, also to facilitate the circular economy and the energy transition.

To act as a catalyst and provide direction for the development of digitalisation and smart industry, various initiatives have recently been unfolded. This is why (KIA) Key Enabling Technologies has defined a group of nine digital and information technologies. Our government perceives the importance of digitalisation and smart industry. Multiple initiatives have been launched to support start-ups and scale-ups in their digital transformation. In addition, universities, research institutes and businesses work closely together to develop and implement ground-breaking technologies.

To continue to develop worldwide, we need to focus on digitalisation and smart industry, also to facilitate the circular economy and the energy transition. Investing in knowledge development and innovation go hand in hand with the further application of digitalisation and smart industry in the sector. We support the application of (new) digital technologies in the high-tech sector and most especially we stimulate new digital technologies and innovations on behalf of the sector. Examples include quantum computing and laser satellite communication. This is how we innovate with and for the ICT sector.

Ambition

With help from digitalisation including smart industry, we work more efficiently, more flexibly and more sustainably. This is how we strengthen our international competitive position and increase our contribution to urgent transitions for Dutch high-tech and manufacturing companies. The deployment of digitalisation and smart industry is not just important for retaining our innovative capacity and economic and societal impact. It also creates opportunities for developing new (international) value chains, business models and control points.

Transition Team: incorporating digitalisation in the very core of the sector

With the Transition Team Digitalisation, we explore the most important developments and components of digitalisation for research and innovation projects. How can we best answer these for the high-tech sector? This allows us to devote more attention to the digital components in research and innovation projects and focus more on the digital infrastructure of research projects and innovations. This is how we aim to improve the efficiency of innovation, making it safer to develop and implement.

Accelerate developments and apply digitalisation including smart industry

How can we best bundle existing and planned activities? The Transition Team will follow up on this based on a request from the roadmaps and strategic programmes. In addition, the Transition Team will take stock of which supporting initiatives, innovations or research the sector needs. We employ the KIA Digitalisation as a basis, in which we work with the Top Sector ICT. Based on this KIA, the Transition Team prepares its own agenda. This is how, as a sector, together we tackle the challenges that go hand in hand with the transition and grab the opportunities that digitalisation and smart industry present us with.

It is essential that our high-tech and manufacturing companies deploy and implement digitalisation and smart industry. We link our sector with initiatives and opportunities that present themselves outside our sector. We disseminate knowledge and share best practices and lessons learned. We work on a greater awareness regarding opportunities and challenges in digitalisation and smart industry. They are all activities with which we promote innovation with the help of new digital technologies. And we do not lose sight of knowledge development: in learning communities we contribute to the development of educative programmes about these topics.

Investing in research

We stimulate joint ventures between companies, knowledge institutes and authorities to accelerate the implementation of smart industry in high-tech SMEs. Through our strategic programming, we work on the development of digital key enabling technologies, such as those that reoccur in the KIA Key Enabling Technologies. We also collaborate actively on the Nationaal Groeifonds (National Growth Fund) programmes, focusing on these topics in our sector. This allows us to develop knowledge and innovations in ICT. In addition, we support programmes that assist SME companies in their digital transition.
