Space technology and satellite data are increasingly essential for security, defense, logistics, infrastructure, science, agriculture, and sustainability. The sector creates more than 10,000 jobs in the Netherlands, reduces dependencies, and is the source of technological innovations. Therefore, at the proposal of Minister Karremans of Economic Affairs, the Council of Ministers has decided to invest more than €340 million in European space programs over the next three years. This will enable Dutch companies and knowledge institutions to continue to innovate and grow.
This is stated in a letter to Parliament regarding the intended allocation of Dutch public space investments to European Space Agency (ESA) programs. The Netherlands Space Office (NSO) has advised the cabinet on how to allocate the 2025-2028 budget. Including national programs, such as laser satellite communication and Earth observation satellites, the cabinet's space policy encompasses over €550 million through 2028.
Minister Karremans:
Space technology has a proven contribution to our economy, innovation, security, and infrastructure. Investing in this area aligns with our National Technology Strategy and the Long-Term Space Agenda. At the same time, funding options are limited, meaning we cannot make any additional, incidental investments in European programs this time. Because the sector is important, we have nevertheless managed to maintain the basic contribution.
