The European Commission has presented the Defense Readiness Roadmap 2030: a roadmap describing how European defense capabilities will be strengthened in the coming years. The goal is clear: to ensure that Europe is better prepared for security threats by 2030 and becomes less dependent on external suppliers for essential technologies and materials. This roadmap opens up new innovation opportunities for the Dutch high-tech sector to contribute to strengthening European security and Europe's technological capabilities.

The roadmap was developed in response to the rapidly changing geopolitical situation, in which war, cyber threats, and increased tensions are putting European security under pressure. To address these challenges, the EU is encouraging closer collaboration between Member States and their industries.

Key points of the roadmap

The Defense Readiness Roadmap 2030 focuses on nine priority areas, including air and missile defense, munitions production, drones, space, and digital resilience. In addition, four flagship projects are being established, such as the European Drone Defense Initiative and the European Space Shield. The EU is investing heavily in production capacity, innovation, and strengthening the supply chain, with an emphasis on collaboration between civilian and military parties.

Opportunities for the Dutch high-tech industry

For the Netherlands, with its strong high-tech and knowledge infrastructure, this roadmap offers concrete opportunities. Technologies developed in the Netherlands, from sensors, photonics, and microelectronics to robotics and AI, directly align with European priorities. Participation in joint European projects can lead to new partnerships, research programs, and industrial contracts.

Holland High Tech sees the Defense Readiness Roadmap 2030 as an opportunity to bridge the gap between defense and high-tech innovation. By strengthening cooperation with European partners, the Netherlands can contribute to a safer future — and simultaneously further expand its position as a supplier of advanced technology within Europe.
