Election debate for research and science

Knowledge, research, and innovation are important topics for the future of the Netherlands. Yet, they're not often topics discussed frequently during election campaigns. For this reason, the Knowledge Coalition is organizing the election debate for research and science on 21 October 2025.

The power of knowledge

During the debate, politicians will discuss the future of knowledge, research, and innovation in the Netherlands. Topics will be addressed that affect not only higher education and science, but also society and the economy as a whole. For example, the way research funding is structured and the choices that need to be made will be discussed. The central question will also be how the Netherlands can strengthen its innovation capacity to achieve sustainable economic growth.

In addition, attention is paid to international competition and the question of how we can retain and attract talent, in conjunction with the European Multiannual Financial Framework.

Finally, it concerns the value of research itself, from fundamental and independent research to the protection of academic freedom.
