From fossil to sustainable mobility | The Netherlands is innovating NOW
Thu 28 Nov 2024 | 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM | Railway Museum, Utrecht
Sustainable mobility is important for our economy and autonomy. This requires different fuels, drives and charging structures, not only in the Netherlands but throughout Europe. To achieve this, we face a major challenge in the coming years. The Dutch aviation, automotive and maritime sectors, together with the transport and logistics sector, are increasing their efforts to realise the transition from fossil fuels to sustainable mobility in the run-up to 2050. We will kick this off during the event From fossil to sustainable mobility | The Netherlands innovates NOW for the future on 28 November in the Railway Museum in Utrecht. Read on for the programme and speakers.

Why this event?
Innovation in mobility: from the 17th century to 2050
It is only logical that the Netherlands plays a major role in the future of mobility and transport in Europe. The Netherlands has a glorious history on land, at sea and in the air, and the manufacturing industry to support this. We were the largest ship manufacturer in the world in the 17th century, Anthony Fokker and Albert Plesman were pioneers in the aviation industry and Hub van Doorne and his brother Wim laid the foundation for truck and car production in the Netherlands.
In 2024, the mobility sector will continue to be a large and important industry in the Netherlands and Europe, supported by top-level knowledge institutions. Our maritime industry supplies ships worldwide, 30% of the >16 ton trucks in Europe are built in the Netherlands and without Dutch technology, no planes take off from Schiphol. This success is partly made possible by a large number of specialized suppliers and maintenance companies that play a crucial role in supplying (digital) systems, components, materials and services. Our logistics sector is the enabler that ensures that the chains in this international ecosystem can continue to develop.
In total, the Netherlands offers space to 245,000 employees within the maritime, aviation and automotive (manufacturing) industry, who together create a turnover of €82.5 billion, the vast majority of which is exported. The logistics sector employs 1,270,000 employees who together create an added value of over €123 billion. These are good figures, but the sectors are under great pressure.
The Netherlands jointly responsible for sustainable mobility in the future
The challenge of replacing fossil fuels with sustainable alternatives (e.g. electricity, hydrogen) is great and the time to achieve this is short. The mobility sectors have already taken up the challenge in 2021 to start innovations to enable the transition to fossil-free and internationally competitive transport solutions. They cannot do this alone. The logistics sector and end users are also working hard on the transition to sustainable mobility. That is why cooperation between industry, the logistics sector, users and the government is essential.
Developments in mobility in Europe
In the Netherlands, investments in the necessary infrastructure for further sustainable mobility are lagging behind our European neighbours. It is crucial that we join forces to preserve these sectors that are important to the Netherlands for the future. In this way, we can maintain the economic earning capacity and strategic autonomy in the Netherlands and also make our society greener.
Together one integrated approach
The transition to sustainable, affordable and feasible mobility requires an overarching strategy in close cooperation with the government, for example in the field of charging infrastructure and regulations. The three mobility sectors are ready to take up this challenge together with the transport and logistics sector and to arrive at an integrated agenda, together with the government.
