Today, there is growing interest in the additive manufacturing of medical devices and instruments. This interest is driven by the unique capabilities of 3D printing technologies to design and fabricate complex, highly customizable products, such as bone implants tailored to individual patients. The OPTIMA project aims to develop a robust design tool that integrates the specific characteristics and constraints of 3D printing.

Impact

The OPTIMA project will build upon existing knowledge from previous research in additive manufacturing within the medical device sector. This accumulated expertise will guide the design, fabrication, and characterization processes crucial for producing high-quality bone implants in this study. BAAT Medical’s expertise in medical device design and evaluation, along with UMCG’s experience in integrating 3D-printed bone implants into clinical practice, will play a vital role in the project’s success.
