The very first SME Defense call was met with great enthusiasm from the high-tech ecosystem. A total of 40 applications were submitted in the field of dual-use projects in the NLD domains of Space, Quantum, and Smart Materials. An independent evaluation committee of external experts from research and/or practice carefully assessed all proposals for quality and impact, and 24 projects were selected to proceed to the next phase.
In the Defense call, we challenge high-tech entrepreneurs to collaborate with research organizations over a two-year period on innovative dual-use projects in the NLD areas of Space, Quantum, and Smart Materials, as defined in the Defense Strategy for Industry and Innovation 2025-2029. The selected projects represent a good representation of the NLD areas.
The next step is for selected projects to submit a detailed project plan by 27 March 2026 (12:00 PM), which will then be assessed. The final projects receiving financial support will be announced starting 19 May 2026.
