Jacquelien Scherpen takes the floor in the new video series "Women in technology speak". As a professor at the University of Groningen, Captain of Science of the Top Team of Holland High Tech & winner of the Prince Friso Engineeringaward 2023, Jacquelien is a prominent figure in the high-tech industry. In this video she shares her insights and experiences regarding the role of women in the technology sector. Her vision is reinforced by findings from recent articles and the international panel discussion "Women in Tech" at the Hannover Messe 2023. These emphasize the importance of more diversity in high tech.
In this video Jacquelien explains what she does, what she thinks is the importance of high tech and why women are essential in this. In addition, Jacquelien also tells how she was helped in her youth, who role models have been for her and how she takes on this role today.
Lack of Women in Tech
The High Tech industry in both the Netherlands and Germany is struggling with a lack of women in technical positions. However, studies show that diverse teams, made up of both men and women, are not only more innovative and successful, but also increase job satisfaction. For this reason, Holland High Tech will pay specific attention to this subject in 2023.
This topic was therefore the reason for the Dutch-German session 'Women in Tech' at the Hannover Messe on April 17, 2023. Jacquelien also participated in this panel discussion. This panel discussion discussed the need for more women in engineering, ways to achieve it and what it takes to retain women. Jacquelien Scherpen during the 'Women in Tech' session at the Hannover Messe 2023:
In the Netherlands it is known that many teachers have unconscious biases. A recent study on the advice young people receive in secondary school shows that boys receive 50% more advice for choosing a technology direction compared to girls who get the same results in math and physics. There is a strong bias. I see this a lot in higher education as well. In childcare we should therefore already start rejecting unconscious prejudices. It can help to start with technique lessons and role models at primary school. The role models are then female teachers who teach technical subjects.
