NWO is making 25 million euros available to support the arrival of leading international researchers to the Netherlands. Later this summer, the call for the new Tulp Fund will open. This fund enables renowned scientists from outside the EU to continue their research at a Dutch research institution. Knowledge institutions can nominate researchers for funding who, due to threats to academic freedom, wish to continue their work in the Netherlands.
Academic freedom is under pressure in several parts of the world, making it increasingly difficult for researchers to work independently. The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) has asked NWO to develop a program for top international scientists who prefer to continue their work in the Netherlands. To support this, 25 million euros has been made available. NWO has matched this amount, bringing the total to 50 million euros. Minister Bruins of OCW informed the Dutch House of Representatives today about the progress of the fund.
