QEX (Quantum EXcellence) is the first Quantum Excellence Centre in Europe and represents a significant step in the further development and application of quantum technology. The initiative is funded by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) and contributes to strengthening Europe's leading position in quantum computing.
QEX serves as a one-stop shop for quantum computing, offering researchers, companies, and industry access to knowledge, applications, and tools. Through targeted training programs and customized support, QEX helps users develop and implement quantum applications and builds a strong and highly skilled quantum talent pool in Europe.
The QEX consortium consists of 11 partners from five EU Member States and is coordinated by Quantum Delta NL. The network includes leading universities and research institutes from Denmark, Spain, Ireland, Germany, and the Netherlands, including TNO.
QEX aligns with the broader ambition of the EuroHPC JU to create a robust European ecosystem for supercomputing and quantum computing. The center has been selected within the Horizon Europe–EuroHPC JU program and will receive approximately €5 million in EU funding.
The EuroHPC JU is also investing in an advanced European supercomputing infrastructure, including 11 supercomputers across Europe, including JUPITER in Germany: the first European exascale system. EuroHPC JU is also building a European quantum computing infrastructure and supporting innovation projects and AI factories that provide companies, startups, and researchers with access to high-performance computing and AI capabilities.
QEX adds a key link to this ecosystem, better preparing European science and industry for the quantum age.
