Dutch Fusion Day 2025
Nuclear fusion and opportunities for business: second edition of Dutch Fusion Day focuses on joint innovation
On Friday 9 May 2025, the second edition of Dutch Fusion Day will take place in Eindhoven, organised by DIFFER, EIRES (TU/e) and BigScienceNL. What opportunities are there for commercial parties? How can they not only take nuclear fusion, but also their own company, a step further?
More information and registration
The current, positive developments in the field of nuclear fusion are following each other in rapid succession. We see unprecedented private funding, countries that are increasing their R&D efforts with regard to nuclear fusion and a great interest in public-private partnerships. Worldwide, more than 7 billion dollars have already been pledged for the development of nuclear fusion (source: FIA). The EU is currently working on a fusion strategy.
Experts predict that major breakthroughs will take place in the coming years. As a result, more and more is being invested worldwide to realise nuclear fusion. This also creates opportunities for the Dutch High Tech and Big Science industry. An example of such an opportunity is the Knowledge and Innovation Covenant (KIC) on system integration for fusion reactors that was recently initiated by DIFFER. We will pay attention to this during the Dutch Fusion Day.
Programme
In the morning there will be presentations focusing on the development of nuclear fusion from the perspective of business, science and politics. Speakers are:
- Dr. Alex Creely (Commonwealth Fusion Systems)
- Twan van Erp (European Commission)
- Klaas de Boer (General Fusion)
In the afternoon there will be three interactive parallel sessions led by experts that will delve deeper into current themes:
- Dr. Thomas Morgan (DIFFER) - Materials in Extreme Conditions
- Prof. Maarten Steinbuch (TU/e) - System and Control Engineering
- Dr. Beata Tyburska-Pueschel (DIFFER) - Fission-Fusion Synergies session
The day will be concluded with a panel discussion discussing which elements a Dutch fusion strategy should contain. The day offers ample opportunity for visitors to network.
