The Netherlands has great climate ambitions. By 2030, CO2 emissions in the Netherlands must be reduced by at least 55%, as a prelude to a climate neutral Netherlands by 2050. To achieve this, the cabinet presented the climate policy programme today.

The climate policy programme is aimed at a 60% CO2 reduction by 2030 and outlines the policy for the coming years. In this way, the government is giving direction to the transitions necessary for climate neutrality in 2050. What does this mean for our industry and technology?

Marc Hendrikse, figurehead of Holland High Tech: “The Dutch high tech industry is pleased with the fact that the cabinet is now pursuing the sustainability agenda. With targeted investments, Holland High Tech can and will work on solutions for sustainability challenges in the fields of mobility, industry, energy and agriculture. The contribution from the National Growth Fund to the NXTGEN HIGHTECH programme is precisely aimed at this. The important side effect is that it also increases the earning capacity of the Netherlands.”

The policy is aimed at making five sectors more sustainable: electricity, mobility, industry, the built environment and agriculture & land use. This was presented to the House of Representatives today on behalf of the Ministers of Climate and Energy, the Interior and Kingdom Relations, Nature and Nitrogen, Housing and Spatial Planning, Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, Economic Affairs and Climate, Finance, Infrastructure and Water Management and the State Secretaries of Taxation and Tax Authorities and Infrastructure and Water Management.

Rob Jetten, Minister for Climate and Energy: “Our ambition is clear: we want to live in a climate-neutral, fossil-free and circular Netherlands by 2050 at the latest. But to achieve that, we can now lose no more time. We will have to produce, consume, travel, live and generate energy in a fundamentally different way. Moreover, the choices that are necessary for this must be made now. This policy programme will ensure that the necessary transitions are accelerated in the coming years, that we focus more closely on the implementation of agreements and that polluting activities receive a fairer price.”
