National Growth Fund Sustainable Mobility News

Demand for electricity and renewable energy for zero-emission vehicles is increasing. The electricity grid and existing regulations are not designed to handle this enormous growth. They also cannot adequately accommodate the increase in renewable energy production. Charging Energy Hubs, a project of the National Growth Fund, aims to address this problem. The project aims to accelerate the electrification of the logistics sector in the Netherlands.

The Charging Energy Hubs project launched in 2024 and will run until 2028. Behind the scenes, 27 companies and knowledge institutions from across the entire energy and automotive value chain are collaborating on Charging Energy Hubs.* The project removes existing financial, legal, and organizational barriers. It also develops integrated technological innovations that enable the integration of charging infrastructure, battery storage, and renewable energy sources within existing electricity grids, even when these grids are under greater demand than they can currently handle.

Ambition Charging Energy Hubs

  • Three operational local energy hubs with a total additional charging capacity of 12 MW for trucks and vans.
  • Validated demonstration of reduced grid congestion through local energy hubs.
  • Delivery of optimized prototypes of digital and physical core technologies for the realization of the Charging Energy Hubs.
  • An economic, organizational, and legal blueprint for the rollout of Charging Energy Hubs.
  • Expanding the Human Capital pool for the technical challenges of the energy transition and specifically the realization of local charging infrastructure.
  • Strengthening the (international) starting position of the Dutch business community.

Economic and social impact

  • The project improves the competitive position and export opportunities of Dutch companies, thereby contributing to their earning capacity. The project aims to give Dutch technology companies in the field of electric mobility a first-mover advantage.
  • The further development of energy hubs will reduce grid congestion, ensuring that the electrification necessary for the energy transition is not delayed. The project thus contributes to increased productivity and a stronger competitive position for the entire Dutch business community.
