News Calls National Growth Fund Energy Materials Sustainable Mobility Energy transition

NWO and the National Growth Fund programme GroenvermogenNL are opening a new call for research into hydrogen infrastructure, aimed at a consortium consisting of researchers and companies. A total of €13 million is available for one proposal. Registration for consortium formation (via ISAAC) is open until 10 March 2026.

To enable the use of hydrogen for a sustainable energy supply, a well-functioning infrastructure is essential. Hydrogen must be transported from production sites and import terminals to locations of use. In this context, the development of conversion technologies for hydrogen and hydrogen carriers, as well as transport and storage solutions, plays a crucial role.

In addition to new technologies, making use of existing infrastructure and integrating new supply chains are also essential for the large-scale import of hydrogen and hydrogen carriers. This call therefore focuses on research into the import, conversion, transport and storage of hydrogen and hydrogen carriers, such as ammonia and liquid organic carriers.

Research directions

Proposals submitted under this call must focus on one or more of the following research directions:

  • Import, transport and storage of liquid hydrogen (LH₂)
  • Import, conversion, transport and storage of hydrogen carriers
  • Development and optimisation of port infrastructure, supply chains and conversion hubs

Consortium formation, workshops and budget

A maximum of one proposal will be funded. The consortium submitting the proposal will be formed during two multi-day workshops. Participation in both workshops is mandatory for the main applicant. Registration for participation via ISAAC is open until 10 March 2026. In addition, Stichting GroenvermogenNL will organise an information meeting on 5 February 2026.

The total available budget for this call is €13 million. NWO will fund up to 80% of the project costs; the consortium is required to provide 20% co-funding or own contribution. The exact conditions can be found in the call for proposals.

About the NGF programme GroenvermogenNL

The National Growth Fund programme GroenvermogenNL is the investment programme aimed at strengthening the green capacity of the Dutch economy and society. Within this programme, green hydrogen is intended to act as a driving force for the transition from a society and industry based on fossil resources to a sustainable energy system. This will enable the Netherlands to develop a new industry and an attractive business climate. To make this transition possible, well-trained people and a strong structure for knowledge sharing are essential. The investment programme runs until 2028.
