The Netherlands is a global leader in the development of quantum computing, quantum sensors, and quantum communication. Quantum Delta NL's data update, "The State of Quantum 2025," shows that the Netherlands now ranks second in this field.

The quantumsector has grown strongly in recent years. Private investments increased from €10 million in 2019 to €160 million in 2025, and the number of quantum startups rose to 29. These companies now provide 735 jobs, the majority of which are in Delft. Innovation is also growing: the number of quantum-related patent applications rose from 11 in 2020 to 60 in 2025.

Dutch quantum activities are organized around five regional hubs in Delft, Eindhoven, Leiden, Twente, and Amsterdam. Thanks to support from the National Growth Fund, which runs until 2028, the country has developed into an international center for research, talent, and entrepreneurship in this technology.

The first practical applications are already visible. For example, a quantum-safe communication line is operating in the Port of Rotterdam, quantum sensors are being used for sharper MRI scans, and quantum random numbers are improving the security of mobile devices. This marks the transition from scientific research to industrial applications.

International competition

At the same time, international competition is fierce. China is investing massive amounts of public money, while in the US, companies like Google, IBM, and Microsoft are driving progress. Europe is also joining forces. According to McKinsey, the global quantum technology market could grow to approximately $97 billion by 2035.

Quantum Delta NL emphasizes that the Netherlands can only maintain its strong position with long-term, stable investments, even after 2028. In the coming years, knowledge and research must be converted into production, exports, and strategic autonomy.
