The Quantum Technologies Conference: 'Shaping Europe's Quantum Futures' took place last week in Brussels. In the run-up to this event, 18 member states of the European Union have signed the Quantum Declaration, including the Netherlands. By working together at European level, we ensure that knowledge about quantum technology in the Netherlands increases. And that the innovation that quantum makes possible can be applied quickly and safely.
Social issues
Quantum technology can help with social issues, such as sustainability or digitalization. For example, quantum computers will probably make extremely difficult calculations possible in the future. Then they can help, for example, when we develop medicines and want to improve weather forecasts.
Global market
The total global market for quantum technology is still difficult to predict. Estimates range from €30 billion to €89 billion in 2040. The Netherlands' share of the annual market size would increase to €1 billion in 2027 and to €3 billion in 2040. Quantum technology is also estimated to create many jobs: 5,000–10,000 direct jobs in 2027 and 15,000–30,000 direct jobs in 2040.
