With the results of the most recent European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator call, a true milestone has been reached for the Netherlands: a total of 500 million euros in funding have been raised by Dutch researchers and entrepreneurs. The EIC program is part of Horizon Europe, the European Commission's overarching research and development program, and focuses on identifying, developing and scaling up breakthrough technologies and innovations.

The EIC program has 3 different instruments, each with its own purpose:

  • EIC Pathfinder for advanced research;
  • EIC Transition for converting research results into groundbreaking innovations and business plans;
  • EIC Accelerator for individual companies to develop, scale up and market breakthrough innovations.

Grant awarded to the Netherlands

Of the €506.3 million that the European Commission awarded to Dutch researchers and entrepreneurs from 2021 to 2023, 75% went to EIC Accelerator, 18% to EIC Pathfinder and 7% to EIC Transition. Of all requested subsidies, 11 to 13% per instrument went to Dutch applicants.
