AI offers many benefits for businesses, governments and civil society organisations. At the same time, the use of AI raises a variety of ethical, legal, societal and economic issues. The National Growth Fund project AiNed gives via ELSA Labs explicitly these issues a place because the development of AI technology, social embedding, and redeeming economic opportunities must go hand-in-hand.

Goal
The purpose of the ‘NGF AiNed - ELSA Labs’ call for proposals is to acquire knowledge and insights that contribute to developing and applying trustworthy, human-centred Artificial Intelligence (hereafter human-centred AI). The research in this programme advances via private-public partnerships, from the perspective of human-centred AI, the development of technological innovations that safeguard public values and constitutional rights, respect human rights – and reinforce these when possible – and which can also count on public support. The research thus encourages the development of an ecosystem of trust.
This call for proposals is the second in a series of three on human-centred AI. The previous call was the NWA Call ‘Human-centred AI for an inclusive society - towards an ecosystem of trust’, launched together with the Netherlands AI Coalition, which resulted in five ELSA Labs.
Through the NWA thematic programming, these five ELSA Labs are demand-driven from public parties. The second AiNed ELSA Labs call is funded from the National Growth Fund. Therefore, at least half of the ELSA Labs to be awarded will focus on ELSA questions from companies developing AI products, processes or services for the market.
When will the call open?
This call for proposals is expected to open at the end of the first quarter of 2023.
Budget and partners
This call for proposals is a research programme under the National Growth Fund (NGF) project AiNed and has a budget of about eight million euros. It is expected that four research projects can be funded.
More information
The opening of the call for proposals will be communicated through the usual NWO channels.
