Jouke de Vries, president of the Executive Board of the University of Groningen, explains why Jacquelien Scherpen emerged as the most suitable candidate: “She is a top scientist and her work is recognized nationally and internationally as innovative and groundbreaking. She knows our university well and we know her as an enthusiastic lecturer, mentor and bridge builder with a great deal of administrative experience in science. As the Executive Board, we look forward to working with her to further strengthen the quality of education and research, as well as the leading position of the University of Groningen.”

Jacquelien Scherpen is pleased with her appointment as Rector Magnificus of the RUG:

I look forward to contributing to the governance of this versatile university as a member of the Executive Board. This versatility means that we have all the ingredients in-house to come up with high-quality and integrated scientific solutions for the major questions from society and the transitions we face. I find it stimulating that the UG has a unique profile in the Netherlands with internationally highly regarded alpha, beta, gamma and technical sciences. In my opinion, this provides a solid starting point for pioneering multi- and interdisciplinary developments in education and research that contribute to social issues.
