Role model for new generation of engineers

The jury report substantiates the decision for Jacquelien Scherpen as winner of the Prince Friso Ingenieursprijs 2023 as follows: Driven by this integrated approach, Jacquelien has become an expert in overcoming obstacles and making connections. Connections between science and technology industry, between learning, working and innovation. Between different research areas. Between women and technology. Between researchers and social developments and between innovations and practical feasibility and so on.

In this way she succeeds time and time again in gaining support and enthusiasm for her plans and then successfully implementing them, preferably together with partners from within and outside the university.

Jacquelien is one of the leading scientists in her field. She combines this energetically and increases the administrative, national and international commitment to science and technology. She is the driving force behind strengthening and broadening engineering research and education in Groningen. For example, through intensive collaborations with companies and the setting up of new training courses.

But she is also committed to the visibility of technology in general, among other things, as she herself said, by enthusing young people for the engineering profession and by breaking gender stereotypes with regard to female engineers. She has enormous impact with her versatile work and all together this makes her a role model for a new generation of engineers.
