In order to make better use of each other's expertise and network, a number of the centers and institutes of the four technical universities (4TU) and the University of Groningen (RUG) will collaborate on research and education.

Structural collaboration

The RUG is exploring collaborations with the centres:

  • 4TU.NIRICT (ICT)
  • 4TU.HTM (High-Tech Materials)
  • 4TU.AMI (Applied Mathematics)
  • 4TU.Energy
  • 4TU.CEE (Engineering Education)

In recent years, the four Technical Universities and the University of Groningen have already been working together in certain areas of education and research, for example via the Technology Sector Plan.
A more structural collaboration on a number of themes increases the possibilities to use each other's network, facilities and expertise. Besides the four TUs, the RUG is the only Dutch university that has been training engineers (ir.) for decades. The RUG also conducts research on various themes within the field of engineering.

High-tech materials for a sustainable future

4TU.HTM and the Groningen Engineering Center (RUG) join forces on education, a community for young materials researchers and the organization of joint materials science activities. They can also complement each other well in the field of Advanced Characterization or advanced techniques for mapping the properties of materials. Now that we are in a period of energy and material transitions, new types of materials will have to be developed to meet these new challenges.

Arjan Mol, scientific director of 4TU.HTM and Moniek Tromp, scientific director of the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials, expect that the collaboration will yield a lot in the coming years.
Tromp (RUG):

Now every collaboration is more one-on-one, between people who happen to know each other. In the future it will become increasingly important that we can find each other easily, also for obtaining financing for larger projects that often involve a lot of money and you have to form consortia."
