Entrepreneurs and research organisations that want to work together to improve and develop sustainable batteries can apply for a subsidy from 16 December 2024 to 16 April 2025. With the Circular Batteries subsidy, they can develop innovations for batteries with a long lifespan, the next generation of lithium batteries, battery systems for heavy vehicles and keeping our power grid stable, and recycling batteries. The subsidy thus reduces dependence on scarce raw materials and strengthens the Dutch position in the international battery market. A total subsidy of 95 million euros is available.
New generation batteries
- The Circular Batteries Subsidy Scheme (SCB) provides compensation for the costs of an innovation project that focuses on:
- improving the current generation of batteries, such as lithium-ion batteries;
- developing the next generation of batteries, which deliver improved performance or use fewer critical materials.
Partnership
The subsidy is for entrepreneurs and research organisations that want to work together on innovations for sustainable and circular batteries. By circular we mean: maximising the use and reuse of raw materials and materials. The partnership must consist of a research organisation and at least one company.
€95 million with 4 separate budgets
Entrepreneurs and research organisations receive a subsidy for an innovation project that focuses on one of the following topics. Each with its own subsidy budget:
- Recovery of critical materials by improving recycling steps of lithium batteries (budget €13.5 million);
- Development and application of long-life batteries and the establishment of an expertise centre (budget €25 million);
- Research and development of battery materials and production processes for next-generation lithium batteries (budget €22.5 million);
- Circular battery systems for heavy vehicles (budget €34 million).
- Apply for subsidy
- Subsidy applications can be submitted from 16 December 2024, 09:00 to 16 April 2025, 17:00.
National Growth Fund
The National Growth Fund (NGF) is an important source of investment for the Dutch government, with more than €11 billion for 50 projects focused on the sustainable economic capacity of the Netherlands. The SCB scheme is part of the NGF programme Material Independence and Circular Batteries (MICB). This programme is one of the initiatives that specifically focuses on innovation and sustainability in battery technology and materials.
