Calls SME innovation Digitalisation & Smart Industry News

In the coming years, companies and other organisations will have to draw up digital product passports for various product groups. Universities of applied sciences can help with the application of these passports by conducting practice-oriented research. To this end, the SIA Governing Body, in collaboration with the ICT Top Sector, will open the Digital Product Passports financing scheme at the beginning of December. A total of 2.7 million euros is available. The SIA Governing Body will organise information meetings about the scheme in December and February 2025.

In order to steer the transition to a circular economy, European and national agreements have recently been made, such as on product passports.

A product passport digitally records the composition and technical data of products from A to Z. They provide information about all the raw materials, processes and components used in a product, making it much easier to reuse the product or recycle the materials as effectively as possible.

Product passports are therefore seen as essential to realise and accelerate the transition to a circular economy. But what is needed for this, how does it work and what knowledge and experience is already available? Universities of applied sciences can play a major role in this with practice-oriented research.

Responding smartly to changes

The SIA Governing Body is implementing this financing scheme, together with partner and co-financier Top Sector ICT. The scheme is part of the programming of the KIA Digitalisation and is also in line with the KIA Circular Economy.

Frits Grotenhuis, director Top Sector ICT:

Digitalisation is changing our way of life, living and working. New knowledge is needed to innovate and respond intelligently to the changes that are coming. This brings opportunities and challenges. Digital product passports are an important development for companies and other organisations to comply with legislation on sustainability and circularity. With this call for practice-oriented research, which we are setting up together with SIA, we are taking an important step.

Opening and budget

The financing scheme is expected to open in the first half of December '24. The subsidy to be applied for amounts to a maximum of 385,000 euros per project. A total of 2.7 million euros is available. The SIA steering body is organising information meetings about the scheme in December and February 2025.
