Technology and science are the driving forces behind innovation and progress. Unfortunately, women and girls remain severely underrepresented in the STEM sectors (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) at universities, higher professional education and intermediate vocational education, while they can make a huge contribution with their view of the world. How do we encourage them to choose these sectors in the future? Today, on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we reflect on the importance of more women in technology and look at the opportunities that the future offers. It is a loss that women and girls often do not choose technology and science. Not only for them, but also for the progress of science itself. Diversity in the sector ensures innovation, new ideas and creative solutions. And that is exactly what we need for the challenges of the future.

Inspiring girls for technology

We know the female scientific pioneers of the past such as Marie Curie, but today it is all about the girls of the future. They must see that a career in technology is just as within reach for them as any other career. By introducing girls to female role models in education and business as early as possible, and making them visible, young girls gain the confidence that they too can have a future in technology. In this way, we build a new generation of female scientists, engineers and innovators.

I myself had few female role models and examples in the past, nevertheless, ordinary women in my immediate environment played an important role in making my study choices. In my introduction video I tell you more about this, among other things.

Participate in Girls’ Day on April 10

A great way to introduce young girls to the world of technology and science is Girls’ Day. On April 10, companies throughout the Netherlands open their doors to girls aged 10 to 15. They get the unique opportunity to discover what it’s really like in technology, science and IT. I am proud that many FME member companies participate every year. At Siemens we also provide an inspiring program, where a parent is also welcome to see how inspiring the world of technology is.

Do you want to participate in Girls’ Day as a company at the last minute this year? Then send an email to girlsday@vhto.nl. By participating, you not only give young girls an unforgettable experience, but you also invest in the future of your own sector. Who knows, you might inspire a future technological innovator!

Together towards an inclusive future

As a sector, let's build a future in which everyone can shine in technology. By taking action now, we ensure that more girls discover and use their talents. We celebrate successes, but also tackle the challenges. Such as the lack of role models, stereotyping, equal opportunities and the low inflow of women into our sector. In this way, we make the technology sector stronger, more diverse and more innovative together.
