VDL ETG Almelo specializes in manufacturing machines and modules for the high-tech industry, with a focus on the semiconductor sector. In one of their systems, magnets are bonded to backing plates using fast-solidifying adhesives. Due to the complexity of the system, even a single adhesive bond failure can jeopardize the system’s reliability through a domino effect, triggering bond failures of neighbouring magnets and ultimately compromising personnel safety.
This project aims to research the processes involved in bond formation to address this critical issue by investigating various parameters that control bond formation and developing validation tools to ensure each bond is reliable enough to prevent failure. By closing the current knowledge and technological gaps, the project will have an impact for high-tech industries reliant on adhesive bonding in magnetic assemblies. Specifically, for VDL, the project will provide technological advancements and in-depth knowledge for client support, which is essential for maintaining their market position.
