Experimental environments

Innovation is impossible without experimentation. That is why environments in which new solutions are developed, tested, substantiated, refined and made ready for application are indispensable. These experimental environments, such as field labs, living labs, testing grounds, learning communities and more, are numerous in the Netherlands and occupy a prominent place in mission-driven innovation policy as a key methodology. Nevertheless, knowledge about its optimal use and operation is still largely unexplored and scattered.

Four challenges

The multi-year Exceed program focuses on tackling four challenges:

  1. Knowledge exchange and development with a good connection to practice, partly to prevent parties from having to reinvent the wheel;
  2. Exploiting synergy and cooperation;
  3. Support for multi-year experimental environments, to encourage sustainable survival, and a better connection to the long-term missions of the innovation policy;
  4. Strengthening the connection of, in particular, SMEs to experimental environments. Creating an overview of existing initiatives, the expertise present there and the relevant focus and areas of application.
