The Dutch composite industry is a forerunner in the field of thermoplastic composite in automated processes. The aim is to maintain and expand this lead. The European project STUNNING is a collaboration between 14 partners, including the Dutch partners SAM XL, GKN Fokker, Nederlands Lucht- en Ruimtevaartcentrum and TU Delft (all members of our industry partner CompositesNL). A number of techniques and processes in which the Netherlands has a leading position come together in this project. Project STUNNING demonstrates the use of new advanced thermoplastic materials and manufacturing techniques in hull construction. This time the STUNNING project is explained, with funding from the European program Clean Sky 2.

Dutch composite industry

Often prompted by climate objectives and a circular economy, innovations in the Dutch composite industry follow each other in rapid succession. The urgency to build lighter can be felt in all sectors. After all, less weight means less energy is needed for movement. Composite has exactly the properties it needs, extremely strong and exceptionally light. In the aerospace, automotive, maritime and energy sectors, design with composite is already common and this will grow explosively in the coming years.

The aviation sector is a crucial player in contributing to a smart, green and integrated transport system, as defined in Horizon 2020. Application of the right fuselage, cabin and systems integration technologies are considered the top contenders for dramatically reducing fuel consumption, CO2 and NOX emissions and noise pollution.
