This brings the number of orders for the Lightyear 2 to 21,000. Car-sharing platform MyWheels, among others, previously ordered thousands of these cars.

Lightyear makes cars with solar panels on the roof, so that drivers are less likely to have to stop at a charging station. The first version of that car, the Lightyear 0, cost more than 250,000 euros. Fewer than a thousand of these are produced.

With the Lightyear 2, the car manufacturer is aiming for a lower price tag and thus a larger market. The target price is less than 40,000 euros. From 2026, the company wants to produce 200,000 cars per year.
