The qualification structure of the MBO for the metal and technological sector has been renewed. From August 1, 2023, the more than 30 qualifications are merged into three main directions: Production Technology, Mechatronics and Engineering. Schools and companies will have more room to work together and move along with technological developments, in order to train young people in a future-oriented way.

This revision is badly needed to deal with the enormous labor shortage in the manufacturing industry. The courses within the MBO will become a lot more attractive for students because of the new structure. Students are taught broader skills so that they can work across the industry and value chain.

The restructuring of the MBO qualifications is a collaboration between the employers' organisations FME, the Koninklijke Metaalunie, the MBO Council, the Cooperation Organisation for Vocational Education and the Business Industry, Holland High Tech and the industry schools. The proposal will be presented to the Minister of Education, Culture and Science, who will determine the new qualification structure this month.
