Which developments will determine the future of our sector? What does this mean for the required skills of our current and future employees? Research agency Panteia has investigated this for positions at MBO and HBO level in the fields of production technology, mechatronics and engineering in our sector. This research builds on an earlier study from 2020.

This research shows that the skills required in our sector are changing faster than before. Digitalization and robotization are the major driving forces. On the one hand, this makes production work simpler, but it increases the demand for people who are able to oversee the entire process and can communicate about it well internally and externally. Knowledge about cybersecurity will also be part of the basics. Although the need for traditional skilled workers is decreasing, vacancies for these employees remain difficult to fill because too few young people opt for these courses.
